Do you like fireworks? Classic cars? Games for your kids? How about live music? In downtown Brevard on the Fourth of July, you can catch hometown spirit along with a wave of American Pride, all the while surrounded by the most energetic group of people in the land.
Known in the area as a stop for many Blue Ridge marathons, bike races, and walks, downtown Brevard hits it big with the Firecracker Run.
The festival started off with a bang early in the morning on the 4th with the 5K/10K event, which is organized by the Brevard Rotary Club. Next year, I hope to run in the event myself! Seeing all the families – all ages alike! – run for the town and the country was truly an inspiring and admirable sight to see.
During the day, downtown streets are closed to a consistently overflowing crowd. This year, the Transylvania Community Arts Council hosted its 36th Annual Fine Arts & Craft Showcase. This was a showcase of local artists, but it also served as a fantastic shopping hub to pick up on unique gifts and items that will certainly stand as irreplaceable momentos of the weekend and town!
One of my favorite things about the weekend is the car show. The Classic Automobile Show stretches for blocks! It impresses both casual passerbys and aficionados alike with vintage vehicles, ranging from the 1920’s to the 1970’s. Unbelievable and priceless cars were shown this year – I, as a car fan myself, felt almost starstruck! And in little ol’ Brevard... I can’t wait to see what next year’s show brings!
The music doesn’t stop with the cars. The Courthouse Gazebo is the center of attention with live music playing all day long. The list of performers is exhaustive and impressive – there was everything from Oldies to Bluegrass to even Swing Jazz! My sister-in-law and I found ourselves boppin’ and smiling ear-to-ear, lost in the delight of the good weather, good friends, and fantastic music.
After we’ve had our hotdogs and burgers, we are treated to a fireworks show that will leave you wanting to spend the rest of your holidays in the mountains. It makes you turn to the one next to you – stranger or relative – and smile huge, enjoying the ambiance. Thank you to Brevard for bringing not only MY family together on this busy holiday, but thousands of other families across the region and country, as well! The lawns of Brevard College were absolutely packed full of gawking on-lookers, and we were all smiling as we lingered after the show, screaming “HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY! GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
