Bent Creek Park... coming soon!

As if it weren’t already perfect at GlenLaurel Preserve, the developers at Evergreen Homebuilders have taken the extra effort to create a park for the community’s residents. Bent Creek Park will be situated on about 3 acres of land behind the existing sales office. The hiking trails will run right through it, continuing along side the winding creek, or “Bent Creek” as it’s been appropriately named. The creek winds throughout the entire community, picking up strength in places and calming down in others. By the park and the sales office, the creek is calming and peaceful, but with a fascinating tendency to bend and twist dramatically.
On the flat areas of the park, there will be planted and maintained lawn, just like a park should be. There will certainly be benches, perhaps an arbor, picnic tables; there are even talks of putting in a fire pit! I can’t wait to see what the developers put together; it will undoubtedly be a perfect addition to the Preserve.
Make sure to ask Dan about it when you come in and check out GlenLaurel – it’ll be worth the visit!

Where IS GlenLaurel, exactly?

You'll find that GlenLaurel is deceptively accessible to you... despite our tucked away setting. GlenLaurel is located just minutes from the heart of Brevard, North Carolina; a small mountain town that is rich in culture and heritage. The area also happens to be known for some of North Carolina's most beautiful and celebrated waterfalls, streams, and trails. What's even better is that this area - specifically Brevard - is remarkably accessible from major metropolitan areas like Charlotte, Atlanta, Knoxville, Raleigh, and Greenville. Driving from Charlotte to GlenLaurel Preserve is a breeze - you'd never guess you were escaping into mountain wonderland in such short time!

Not coming from one of these surrounding cities? Did we mention that Brevard - and thus, GlenLaurel Preserve - is just a 1/2-hour drive to the Asheville Regional Airport?

If you're coming from the heart of Brevard, follow Hwy 64 West for just about 5-6 minutes. Turn right on Cherryfield Loop Road, then right onto Cherryfield Creek Road. As you turn right, you'll see the grand Laurel Club to your right. The Sales Center is about 1/4 of a mile down on the left. This is without a doubt a hidden treasure! Come see for yourself - now you know it's just a stone's throw away!

GlenLaurel Preserve taking shape!

After hearing what Dan, the Evergreen Sales Consultant on-site at GlenLaurel Preserve, had to say about all the progress at the community, I can't wait to go see it in person! Last time I visited GlenLaurel Preserve was over Independence Day weekend. At that point, the highly anticipated Laurel Club main building was finishing construction with windows going in and exterior finishes being applied - it was so exciting! To see the makings of a legendary mountain community being erected before my eyes made me eager to tell everyone about it. The clubhouse is located at the entrance of GlenLaurel. The clubhouse will be the center for all of the neighbors' and community's gatherings - dinners, parties, HOA meetings, celebrations galore!

Directly behind the clubhouse is a state-of-the-art pool flanked by an impressively luxe deck and poolhouse cabana. It is starting to really pull together and look all the more fantastic. It looks like a 5-star resort private pool area - which is basically what it is! And just beyond the pool area - further behind the clubhouse, leading into the community - is an open field that faces a naturalistic amphitheater that will be centerstage for many local bands and artists to come and play music and shows for the community. HOW EXCITING!

Dan's update let me know that the clubhouse is already an impressive sight for visitors. It's churning all types of conversation as locals and visitors alike wonder what the buzz is about and want to be a part of it. The pool has officially been "poured" - meaning that the shell is formed with concrete, and all the piping and major structural steps have been completed. IT'S SO CLOSE! The deck has been graded out, so be on the look-out and be sure to claim your favorite spot in the sun as soon as its finished.

The stage for the amphitheater will be constructed atop a small pond, and Dan says that the waterfall and pond are shaping up and that he is excited to see it all "flow" together... Come see for yourself! The Laurel Club and its glory is going to unlike anything else in the area - no place else has the charm, ambiance, and resources that GlenLaurel has captured.

Stay tuned for more updates about the property - next up: a visit through the walking trails! I'm going to trek through the Pisgah and weave my way throughout the community. Let you know soon how it goes, or meet me there!

Independence Day in Brevard

Do you like fireworks? Classic cars? Games for your kids? How about live music? In downtown Brevard on the Fourth of July, you can catch hometown spirit along with a wave of American Pride, all the while surrounded by the most energetic group of people in the land.

Known in the area as a stop for many Blue Ridge marathons, bike races, and walks, downtown Brevard hits it big with the Firecracker Run.

The festival started off with a bang early in the morning on the 4th with the 5K/10K event, which is organized by the Brevard Rotary Club. Next year, I hope to run in the event myself! Seeing all the families – all ages alike! – run for the town and the country was truly an inspiring and admirable sight to see.

During the day, downtown streets are closed to a consistently overflowing crowd. This year, the Transylvania Community Arts Council hosted its 36th Annual Fine Arts & Craft Showcase. This was a showcase of local artists, but it also served as a fantastic shopping hub to pick up on unique gifts and items that will certainly stand as irreplaceable momentos of the weekend and town!

One of my favorite things about the weekend is the car show. The Classic Automobile Show stretches for blocks! It impresses both casual passerbys and aficionados alike with vintage vehicles, ranging from the 1920’s to the 1970’s. Unbelievable and priceless cars were shown this year – I, as a car fan myself, felt almost starstruck! And in little ol’ Brevard... I can’t wait to see what next year’s show brings!

The music doesn’t stop with the cars. The Courthouse Gazebo is the center of attention with live music playing all day long. The list of performers is exhaustive and impressive – there was everything from Oldies to Bluegrass to even Swing Jazz! My sister-in-law and I found ourselves boppin’ and smiling ear-to-ear, lost in the delight of the good weather, good friends, and fantastic music.

After we’ve had our hotdogs and burgers, we are treated to a fireworks show that will leave you wanting to spend the rest of your holidays in the mountains. It makes you turn to the one next to you – stranger or relative – and smile huge, enjoying the ambiance. Thank you to Brevard for bringing not only MY family together on this busy holiday, but thousands of other families across the region and country, as well! The lawns of Brevard College were absolutely packed full of gawking on-lookers, and we were all smiling as we lingered after the show, screaming “HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY! GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

White Squirrel Festival 2008

A white squirrel? Yes! Brevard is home not only to gray squirrels and boomers, but also a white variety. Approximately 25% of Brevard's squirrels are white squirrels, according to an annual survey conducted by the White Squirrel Institute. Clearly, this fact alone, stands for reason to hold the annual White Squirrel Festival in downtown Brevard. This year, I got to see what the fuss is all about! What I found is that people come from all around to partake in the Memorial Day fun... we all went nuts!

The festival had an entire block sectioned off for just food vendors; everything from funnel cakes, lemonade slushies, hot dogs, pretzels, candy... you name it. Right after the food, there was a huge stage where live music was almost constantly playing. They had great music playing from the speakers if there wasn't a live band, too. One of the headliners this year was Edwin McCain!! From what I understand, Edwin is from the mountains of NC and this was surely an homage to his roots. How wonderful!
There were about 4 full blocks of vendors that had tents and booths set up, lining the both sides of Main Street and South Broad Street. Vendors ranged from eclectic jewelry, antiques, handmade birdhouses, fantastic local art and photography, to fundraisers and charities raising money through contests and activities. At one point, I felt like my senses were on overload with all the wonderful sights to be seen, aromas to be smelled, and sounds to be heard.
In addition to all of the booths, most of the stores that are on those streets were open too! Needless to say, I didn't walk away empty handed. I found an incredible sling messenger bag that was created from pieces of Latin American tribal clothing - how cool! What's even better, part of the proceeds went to funding education projects in Guatemala. I also got some great jewelry made by local artists; stuff you won't find anywhere else.
Just when you think you can't pack any more personality and fun into 3 square blocks, we stumbled upon the the second running of the hugely poplular Squirrel Box Derby... a go-cart race down jailhouse hill in downtown Brevard. There were heats for both kids and adults - truly entertaining!!
If you haven't made your way to the festival, definitely schedule a trip to come see it in 2009 - you just can't miss out! See you there next year!

Brevard... a small town rich with mountain heritage

This picturesque mountain town lies at the entrance to Pisgah National Forestmarking the crossroads between Pisgah, Dupont State Forest, Gorges State Park, and Bracken Mountain Nature Reserve. It is located in western North Carolina, about 30 to 45 minutes southwest of Asheville. With the moderate climate and surrounding environmental beauty, Brevard has become a noted tourism, retirement and cultural center in western North Carolina. Additionally, it is considered an exceptional hub for outdoor activities like hiking, climbing, fishing, biking, and kayaking.

What I love most about the city is that it really does have something for everyone, which is remarkable considering its small-town ambiance. If you’re not one for outdoor mountain activity, and you’re searching for something to brood your artistic side, there is no better place than this. The vibrant populace, along with the Transylvania Community Arts Council, continue to deliver diverse programs, concerts, and exhibits to our mountain community. Brevard is the home of Brevard College, a four-year liberal arts institution with nationally-recognized programs in music and environmental studies. Additionally, the town is also home to Brevard Music Center, one of the nation’s preeminent summer music teaching and performance institutions. With all of the notable support, its no surprise that the town boasts an extensive local music and arts community, hosting numerous festivals and artistic events throughout the year.

The city is nicknamed “The Land of Waterfalls” due to the many waterfalls in the area, including Looking Glass Falls, Connestee Falls, and Sliding Rock.
Brevard is home to the Brevard White Squirrel Festival. Approximately 25% of Brevard's squirrels are white squirrels, according to an annual survey conducted by the White Squirrel Institute.

Who is Evergreen? About the Builder...

For most builders, the first step to building a home is laying the foundation. For Evergreen Homebuilders, the first step is listening. In fact, that was the first step we took in building our company. Long before we built our first home, we set out to discover exactly what people really wanted in their homes. We conducted focus groups. We talked to people. And we listened.
It was from these meetings, along with managing partner Ted Futrelle's decades of local homebuilding experience and own unique family experiences, that a set of core beliefs for Evergreen Homebuilders emerged:
• Standard in our homes would be many features other builders considered upgrades.
• We would not build fluff; even the interior construction of our homes that buyers never see would be of the highest quality materials built to exacting standards.
• We would honor the traditions and natural beauty of the mountains we have been coming to for a generation.
• We would hire people who share our belief that the only way a local homebuilder can succeed is to treat our customers not only as customers, but as neighbors.
• We would be honored to have you as a neighbor at GlenLaurel Preserve.
The result that has risen from this rich combination of beliefs and experiences is the Evergreen Difference, a home of distinguishable quality that is head and shoulders above the rest. Unquestionably, it is the kind of home you'd be proud to own. And we'd be proud to build it for you.
